১৭১৭ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে ব্রিটিশ ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানি মুঘল সম্রাট ফারুখশিয়ারের কাছ থেকে কলকাতার চারপাশের ৩৮টি গ্রাম ইজারা নেওয়ার অধিকার লাভ করে। পরবর্তীতে, ১৭৫৭ সালে পলাশীর যুদ্ধে সিরাজ-উদ্-দৌলার পতনের পর, ১৭৫৮ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে কোম্পানি নতুন নবাব মীর জাফরের কাছ থেকে এই গ্রামগুলি কিনে নেয়। এই গ্রামগুলিকে একত্রিত করে ‘দিহি পঞ্চান্নগ্রাম’ (পঞ্চান্নটি গ্রাম সংবলিত অঞ্চল) নাম দেওয়া হয়েছিল। সিঁথি ছিল এই ঐতিহাসিক দিহি পঞ্চান্নগ্রামের অন্যতম একটি গ্রাম।
